Professional bass fishing angler Melvin Smitson Baltimore, Maryland takes 4th place on Marshyhope Creek 08/03/13. On an overcast day filled with periodic downpours of rain local angler Melvin Smitson and his partner ( His Dad ) came out on the sunny side of this tournament hosted by Crabtowne Bassmasters.

The formidable team showed up today's event looking to defend their title from last years annual Crabtowne Bassmaster's open team tournament victory.

"Repeating as champions on Marshyhope Creek is not an easy task and today we let it slip right through our fingers. My dad missed a nice 3 pound largemouth on a weightless Texas rigged soft plastic stick bait and I missed a few fish on a weightless soft plastic stick bait rigged wacky style. The biggest bass I missed was every bit of 5 lbs. I felt it get on and set the hook while she started fighting back and then she flashed at me sideways and got off."

Maybe it was the weather that had the bass hitting funny or maybe the pressure of being reining champions got to this team of salty Marshyhope Creek anglers.

"You never really know while your out there on the water how much missing nice fish will cost you but it became clear very quickly when we got back to weigh in how much our mistakes would hurt us today. When you start missing 3 lb, 4 lb and 5 lb bass on the Marshyhope it's going to catch up with you real fast."

Melvin and his Dad weighed in 7 bass for 12 lbs 4 oz and landed 15 bass on the day. Catching them on soft plastic stick baits, bladed swim jigs and shallow crankbaits like the Megabass Knuckle 60.

"Missing our biggest bass the way we did is going to sting for awhile. First place had 15 lbs and we where right there if we could have just landed all of our big bass today."

"I would like to thank the folk's over at Crabtowne Bassmasters for hosting this Marshyhope Creek tournament. They have this tournament on a yearly basis and the bass in Marshyhope Creek are getting bigger and bigger with out a doubt."

According to Melvin, there are plenty of fish to be had."Right now the bigger bass in the 3 lb - 6 lb range are showing up on the Marshyhope and Nanticoke on a more regular basis. Over the years, we have always had the numbers here on this fishery but now we have the weights to go with those numbers."

For those of you that are not familiar with the history of Marshyhope Creek. It used to be years ago that anglers would run all the way to the Wicomico River for a large sack of fish during a Marshyhope Creek tournament because all you would catch in Marshyhope Creek where 12'' bass all day long.

With gas prices headed toward $4.00 per gallon. Did the thought of running to the Wicomico River cross your mind today?

"You don't need to do that now, even if gas where .99 per gallon. I would have stayed and fished on the Marshyhope or Nanticoke. The bass fishing is starting to be very good here now that the stocked fish from years ago are growing up. The big bass are more available"

Crabtowne Bassmasters only had 16 or 17 boats today. It sure would be great to see that number of boats grow sharply before next years open team tournament.

Hopefully if your reading this report you can get over to Marshyhope Creek to practice and look up Crabtowne Bassmasters sometime before next years open team tournament. You can get your sign up information online at http://www.crabtownebassmasters.com

Smitson went on to say..

"Marshyhope Creek is a great place for beginner anglers or pro anglers. It's also one of my favorite places to catch largemouth bass! With the bass fishing getting to be this good it would not surprise me to see B.A.S.S. Weekend Series or FLW Bass Fishing League come a knocking."

If your interested in dropping your boat in for a good day of bass fishing. Try Federalsburg boat ramp, Sharpstown boat ramp, Seaford boat ramp or the Phillips Landing boat ramp.

See you on the Marshyhope,

Melvin Smitson
