Local Pro Melvin Smitson takes 6th place on Nanticoke River! Today Delaware Bass Federation held an open team buddy tournament out of Phillips Landing in Broad Creek, Delaware. Broad creek is located just off the Nanticoke River which is shared by anglers in both Delaware and Maryland.

It took 17 pounds of largemouth bass to win today's tournament on the Nanticoke River. A total that slipped through the fingers of the the 6th place team Melvin Smitson and his partner (Dad) three times throughout the day. Team Smitson had plenty of action non the less. They wound up with a respectable 13 pounds and .22 ounces on a day that fielded around 45 boats for this event.

Pro Angler Melvin Smitson And Partner (Dad) Holding Gambler Ace Lures

"I missed a nice 3 pounder this morning on a wacky soft plastic stick bait on the main river. Then I switched to a Buckeye Flipping Jig with no luck. Then I switched to a War Eagle Spinnerbait and got blanked. Then I switched over to a weighted Texas Rigged Gambler Ace and landed one in short order. I used a Gambler Southern Swim Jig for a little bit. Nothing on small crankbaits but my partner was having good luck with a weightless Texas Rig Gambler Ace. I switched back over to a wacky rigged soft plastic stick bait near the end of the tournament and filled out our limit." ~ Said Melvin.

Story has it that Melvin and his partner (Dad) also missed the same 3 pounder twice near the end of the tournament! For those of you keeping score that's two three pounders missed with three total tries at them.

Pro Angler Melvin Smitson Scouting Out The Nanticoke River

"We had our limit of bass but needed to cull two 12 inchers to upgrade our total weight near the end of the tournament. My partner throws his Gambler Ace in around this stump out in the middle of nowhere and ties into a nice 3 pounder but it got off. I threw my soft plastic stick bait right In behind him and BANG it was on! The three pounder that my partner just missed was dancing on top the water while 1st place was crossing my mind. Then just as quick as she got on she was gone." ~Team Smitson

Melvin And Partner (Dad) Displaying Crab Place Jersey's After The Nanticoke River Tournament 6/29/14

Melvin and his partner reeled in a total of 40 largemouth bass today. They also witnessed a early morning female deer (Doe) swimming from one side of the Nanticoke River to the other in Seaford, Delaware. Most interesting though was the story of a beaver porpoising over their baits in a depth of 9 feet of water, around lunch time near Sharpstown, Maryland. This tournament duo found all their fish on the Nanticoke River between Seaford and Sharpstown. The tide was out going for most of the tournament.

Melvin and his partner were sponsored for today's tournament by The Crab Place! Please visit www.crabplace.com for all of your crab and seafood delivery needs.
